Oslo, Norway – July 17, 2025:
Renowned Norwegian skier and Olympic medalist Audun Groenvold has tragically passed away after being struck by lightning, the Norwegian Ski Federation confirmed on Wednesday. He was 49 years old.
Groenvold, best known for winning a bronze medal in ski cross at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, was struck during a cabin trip earlier this week. According to the federation, he was immediately rushed to the hospital after the incident but succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday night.
“It is with great sadness that we have received the news of Audun Groenvold’s untimely passing,” the federation said in an official statement. “He was a beloved figure in both Alpine and freestyle skiing in Norway.”
A Versatile Skiing Career
Groenvold began his career as a national Alpine skier, making his mark with a World Cup podium finish in 1999, where he placed third in a downhill event in Sierra Nevada, Spain. He later transitioned into freestyle skiing, where he truly made his name.
In addition to his Olympic success, Groenvold captured a bronze medal at the 2005 World Ski Cross Championships and won the overall Ski Cross World Cup title in 2007.
Life Beyond Competition
After retiring from professional competition, Groenvold remained active in the sport, serving as a national team coach and working as a television commentator. His insight and charisma made him a respected voice in Norwegian winter sports.
A National Loss
President of the Norwegian Ski Federation, Tove Moe Dyrhaug, paid tribute to Groenvold, calling his death a devastating blow to the skiing community.
“Norwegian skiing has lost a prominent figure who contributed immensely to both Alpine and freestyle skiing,” she said. “His absence leaves a huge void in our sporting family.”
