ISLAMABAD: A deadly clash between Pakistani security forces and militants in the rugged terrain of South Waziristan has resulted in the martyrdom of two soldiers, including a senior army officer, and the elimination of 11 militants, the military confirmed on Tuesday.
According to a statement released by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the intelligence-based operation was launched in the South Waziristan district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, near the Afghan border. The action came in response to credible reports about the presence of militants allegedly backed by foreign elements, particularly those with links to Indian agencies.
The fallen soldiers included a Pakistan Army major, whose name has not been released pending notification of next of kin. The military paid tribute to their sacrifice, noting their bravery and commitment to protecting the country against threats to its sovereignty.
The operation saw intense gunfire as troops engaged a group of armed militants entrenched in the mountainous region. ISPR confirmed that 11 militants were killed in the exchange, and a cache of weapons and explosives was recovered from the site.
“The operation reflects the unwavering resolve of Pakistan’s armed forces to eliminate terrorism from every inch of our soil,” the ISPR stated, adding that the military remains vigilant against both internal threats and externally sponsored elements aiming to destabilize the country.
South Waziristan, once a stronghold of militant groups, has witnessed numerous operations over the past decade as Pakistan continues its push to restore lasting peace in its tribal belt. The region remains strategically significant due to its proximity to Afghanistan and has often been cited in security concerns involving cross-border militancy.
Security forces have intensified surveillance and clearance operations in the area, vowing to pursue all remaining militant hideouts.
