South Africa: Police Minister Placed on Leave Over Alleged Crime Links

Police Minister Senzo Mchunu Removed

Tensions have risen in South Africa after serious allegations emerged linking Police Minister Senzo Mchunu to organized crime networks. In a swift response, President Cyril Ramaphosa placed Mchunu on immediate leave and ordered an independent investigation.

Speaking in a nationally televised address on Sunday night, President Ramaphosa emphasized that the allegations pose a threat to national security and undermine public trust in state institutions. He announced the formation of a judicial commission to thoroughly examine the claims.

To ensure stability within the ministry, the president appointed constitutional law expert Professor Firoz Cachalia as the interim Police Minister until further notice.

In response, Senzo Mchunu strongly denied any wrongdoing and said he is fully prepared to face the inquiry and defend his integrity through legal means.

This development could mark a turning point for accountability and transparency in South African politics—provided the investigation remains impartial and effective.
