Washington (19 July 2025): Former U.S. President Donald Trump has claimed that up to five fighter jets were shot down during the brief India-Pakistan military standoff in April 2024, following a deadly attack in Indian-administered Kashmir.
Speaking at a dinner with Republican lawmakers, Trump said, “Planes were being shot out of the air… I think five jets were shot down actually,” without clarifying which side suffered the losses.
The April tensions escalated after a militant strike in Kashmir, prompting air combat between Indian and Pakistani forces. Pakistan claimed it downed five Indian jets, while denying any of its own losses. However, it admitted its airbases were hit.
India, on the other hand, acknowledged early setbacks, but said it later adjusted tactics and claimed it shot down multiple Pakistani aircraft. India denied losing five jets.
No independent verification has confirmed either side’s claims, and satellite or third-party intelligence has remained inconclusive. A ceasefire was reached in May 2024, halting open hostilities.
Trump’s comments — lacking details — have sparked renewed curiosity, but neither India nor Pakistan have officially responded to the statement so far.
